One of the biggest problems most seem to face in social media is how to really grab the attention of their audience. For many this has being proved to be elusive and it always seems to be the most difficult thing to do. And we have not even started discussing about how to hold that attention when you finally manage to grab it for the first time.
It is actually all much simpler than most people imagine.
To start with, it would be of great help if you understood the basics of human nature. What drives people? What grabs their attention? Why?
You also need to check your behavior in social media and compare it to similar situations out there in the real world. For instance, what do you think would happen if you went to a party and just talked about yourself all night? You would bore people very quickly and in no time at all they would start avoiding you. The same holds true for social media.
Tell a good story
Chances are that you have been to a party where someone has just grabbed everybody’s attention with his or her story. He or she probably started out telling it to one or two people but gradually the audience swelled until a larger group of guests is interested in the story.
What makes for a good story that will grab the attention of people? You need to find the answer to that question and it will revolutionize your social media experiences. It is human nature to want to hear about the problems other folks faced and how they overcame them or got through a particularly trying period. Good stories that hold your attention usually have a good villain. Professional storytellers call it conflict and tell us that you cannot have a good story that does not have conflict.
If it is a product you are talking about on social media, the best way to grab the attention of people is to focus on their most pressing problems and it’s devastation. Focus instead on the product and you quickly bore them.
Consistency is critical in social media
How often do you post? How often do you see your friends? The truth is that if you do not make the effort to stay in touch, chances are that you will drift apart. You need to post regularly. Actually people expect to hear from you almost daily. New challenges, decisions, interesting moments and so on. When you post consistently without fail you will end up not only attracting and holding the attention of your current audience but you will also succeed in attracting new people.
Say it with a photograph or illustration
Studies have shown that people generally react positively to images posted on social media, because they are easier to absorb and faster to understand than a block of text. This is the reason why you will find that photos tend to engage the most on social media and will usually attract the highest number of comments.
The more you tell your story using photos the more engaging you will end up being to your audience. So you need to go out of your way to get good pictures. Put a lot of thought into the kind of photo that would be interesting.
Let’s say you were promoting a restaurant on social media. Announcing that you have a new menu using lots of text will not be as effective as a photo of the food, especially if it photographs well.
You need to add value to lives
Do you deliver value with your updates? That is one of the most important questions when it comes to grabbing the attention of others. It is a question that you need to constantly ask yourself.
Mention the names of your friends
When you mention somebody’s name it not only attracts attention from that person but also from all those who know them. This is an extremely powerful technique to use in social media that can be invaluable when it comes to getting the attention of your audience.
